STM Switch 1Introduction:

If you have a larger laptop, you are more likely to need a laptop rucksack or backpack to help spread the weight of your laptop more evenly when in transit.  Having said that if you spend your time travelling with more than one bag, the addition of a shoulder strap is something of a boon allowing you to comfortably (within reason) carry multiple cases or bags and still have easy access to the bag. The latest laptop bag from STM fits both these bills, acting as a dedicated laptop backpack or alternatively a messenger style bag (with tablet storage), with the included shoulder strap.

Specifications:

  • High density padded laptop compartment
  • Converts to shoulder bag with added strap
  • Easily hide backpack straps in concealed pocket
  • Soft lined iPad/tablet pocket
  • Quick release buckles give access to all pockets
  • Full sized pocket for folders and documents
  • Zippered organiser pocket for accessories and essentials

STM Switch 2Review:

Constructed from heavy duty polyester ripstop material, the STM Switch feels built to last and comes in either black or beige (very business-like!).  The bag is built to accomodate up to 17" laptops in a soft-lined (soft brushed nylex) compartment that is also very well padded to prevent any damage to an installed laptop or notebook. In front of the laptop compartment is another soft-lined to accomodate any tablet computer.  Any laptop or tablet installed in the bag are held in place by a piece of polyester webbing that is held in place by velcro.  In addition to the tablet and laptop compartments there are two further compartments, an open pocket big enough to house power adaptors and accessories and a zipped pocket that has various smaller sections to help house any stationary you might take on the move.  Covering all of these compartments is a larger padded flap that is secured by two adjustable clips.

On the very well padded rear of the "backpack" are the two adjustable backpack shoulder straps that are well padded to help cushion your back whilst carrying your devices around with you and in use the bag felt very comfortable to wear, even when fully loaded.  In case you want to carry the bag like a messenger style bag, the backpack straps can be detached at their base and tucked in to a conveniently located pocket on the rear of the bag.  This allows the bag to be carried simply by the padded carry handle on the top of the bag, or alternatively using the additional shoulder strap that allows you to carry the bag like a messenger bag.  Either way the bag feels comfortable to carry due to the sheer amount of padding in the straps and back of the bag.

STM Switch 3Price:

~£60 (at the time of writing)

Verdict:

4.5/5 - As we have mentioned before, the STM range, although not necessarily the cheapest, really does provide excellent quality, good value for money and excellent protection for any devices carried inside.  The STM Switch offers above and beyond the average messenger or laptop rucksack covering both angles, providing a innovative and veratile solution for carrying both tablets and laptops.
