Last year we reviewed the excellent Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC 2010, which turned out to be a fantastic little piece of software that really improved the speed of the old Dell D420 we had lying around the office! With the lastest release of Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC (2011) we were eager to see how the software had evolved in the last year.
For those who didn't read our original review, Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC acts as a simple system optimisation tool that scans for junk files for removal, provides a series of system tweaks and tools that remove redundant processes and optimise visual effects etc. for speed.
This year we decided to really test the software out and see how it could improve system performance on an even older Dell D410 (a laptop of last resort!) running on Windows XP. Needless to say, Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC 2011 did just as good a job as the 2010 version did on our old Dell D420, making everything seem to run faster and overall the system was more responsive with less time hanging around waiting for Mozilla Firefox to load for example. Startup and shutdown also appeared to be quicker, all of which made the old D410 far more useable than it had been previously - hopefully there won't be any moans next time someone has to write an article on the old machine!
The improvements listed by Uniblue between the 2010 and 2011 versions mainly revolve around slight tweaks (improved proxy settings page) and better scan scheduling which make the software that slight bit easier for people to use. More meaty changes include new tweaks including enabling boot defragmentation which in parts aids with speeding up startup and shutdown times. All in all, the changes don't really add up to make it much better than the 2010 version, however that did such a good job that to be fair we didn't really expect that many improvements!
Uniblue provides full support for its products via its' website and also provides regular, automatic updates to the software to make sure that everything runs sweetly. As well as SpeedUpMyPC 2011, Uniblue also provides RegistryBooster and DriverScanner softwares that as their names may suggest keep both the registry and hardware drivers up to date and optimised (we reviewed both 2010 versions last year and they are equally as useful as SpeedUpMyPC). Uniblue is also a Microsoft Gold Certified partner giving us great confidence that it isn't only us that recommend this product!
