Whether you are a video editor, web designer, youtube fanatic or public speaker you cannot fail to have had to convert a video into a different format and will know the difficulties involved in conversion between different formats, resolutions and qualities.  There are a number of freeware or shareware solutions out there to overcome these hurdles, however they are normally difficult to use or have a requirement for an extensive number of codecs (which in turn leads to the need to download further software packages!).

It appears, though, that the software company Digiarty Software, Inc. may just have the solution with their WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe software package.  This commercial software incorporates over 160 video codecs and 50 audio codecs to save hunting around the web for the correct ones for your task, and also supports Multi-CPU and Hyper Threading modes to fully harness the latest processors.  As well as this the software also incroporates a simple to use interface and effectively a wizrd based system for conversion of video files to an almost indefinite number of formats (see below for a full list) so that video can be watched on everything from a computer or console to an iPod and other handheld devices, as well as an optimised format for uploading to Youtube.  (it is important to note that this software is not a ripping software and therefore cannot directly take video from a commercial DVD).

Use of the software really is as simple as selecting the video(s) to be converted and selecting the desired output category (general video, DVD, HD Video, Apple, Sony, Microsoft, Portable, Music) and then selecting the specific output format in the extended menu system.  Each option is fully customisable for qualtiy and sampling rates as well as specific encoding for both audio and video streams, and even the amount of system resources can be tailored to the job (core usage etc.).  Even better jobs can be batched so that multiple video files can be converted at the same time.

In our tests with the software we tried interconverting .mov, .avi, and .wmv files and compared (by eye!) the results and were duly impressed.  We couldn't determne any significant loss in visual or audio quality and the jobs ran faster than we expected (WinX boasts up to 15X real time video speed for the conversion).  For the price (~$30 at the time of the review) we couldn't fault the software for both the accuracy as well as the speed of the conversion and we would gladly recommend the software to those that need a simple to use video conversion tool.
